Materials for vibration and noise control plays important roles in the realization of comfortable environment. The function of those materials are classified into vibration damping, vibration insulation, sound absorption and sound insulation. In order to effectively reduce the noise and sound level, approprieate materials must be arranged in products. This article explains the mechanism for vibration and noise control and fundamental knowledge for the design of each type of materials. In addition, this article introduces new materials for vibration and noise control; piezoelectric materials which can dissipate the vibration and noise energy at a certain frequency controlled by the inductance of the shunted electric circuits, and nanofiber non-woven sheets which exert high sound absorption performance without increasing the thickness.
