Abstract
Linear polysiloxanes have been well-known to show the particular characteristics, such as flexibility of the main chain, low glass transition temperature, hydrophobicity based on alkyl side chain, thermostability, stability against atomic oxygen, and physiological inertness. Polysilarylenesiloxane derivatives are a series of useful polymers where an aromatic moiety is incorporated into the polysiloxane backbone, which would presumably improve the good properties of polysiloxane, especially the thermostability.
The properties of polysilarylenesiloxane derivatives are influenced by the kind of arylene moiety, the substituted position of dimethylsilyl groups as well as the substituent on the arylene moiety, and so on. This paper deals with the new synthetic methods and thermal properties of the various novel polysilarylenesiloxane derivatives having naphthylene, anthrylene, phenanthrylene, and fluorenylene moieties as the arylene moiety. Additionally, this paper presents the synthesis and the thermal properties of the fully aromatic polysilarylenesiloxane derivatives as well as those of poly (tetramethylsilphenylenesiloxane) derivatives with functional g roups on the phenylene moiety, such as oxyethylene groups and phenolic-hydroxyl groups.
