The Society of Rubber Science and Technology, Japan is the only academic organization in Japan dedicated to rubber, elastomers, and soft materials, composed primarily of scientists and engineers engaged in science and technology.
We provide members with opportunities to present research findings, publish association journals, and host various events to disseminate information related to rubber, elastomers, and soft materials.

In the 1920s, when the rubber industry was established in Japan, the “Japan Rubber Association” was established in Kansai in December 1927 (Showa 2) and the “Tokyo Rubber Discussion Society” was established in Kanto in April 1928 (Showa 3) as venues for the development of rubber technology and the training of technicians in the Kanto and Kansai regions.(renamed “Rubber Association” in 1930, Showa 5). In 1932 (Showa 7), the two associations merged to form the “The Society of Rubber Science and Technology, Japan.”
1. To improve the technical and academic capabilities of our members
2. To evaluate research and science and technology and disseminate information
3. To revitalize and develop industry
4. Submitting recommendations and proposals to the government and industry
5. Promoting scientific understanding of rubber, elastomers, and soft materials among the general public
1. Publication of Association Journal (Nippon Gomu Kyokaishi)
We deliver cutting-edge and insightful information on original research papers related to science and technology in rubber, elastomers, and soft materials, as well as the latest topics and practical issues, organized by relevant themes and presented by leading experts in the field.
2. Hosting of Three Major Events
We host the following events as opportunities for members to present research, exchange information, and access the latest information:
・Annual Meeting: Held every May. Includes research presentations and an award ceremony.
・Summer Seminar: Held every July–August. Seminars on industry-relevant themes presented by guest speakers.
・Elastomer Symposium: Held every December. Research presentations by researchers from companies, research institutions, and universities.
3. Research Subcommittees
Conduct research and surveys on specific themes to enhance the capabilities of committee members and share the results through technical symposia, providing information to all those involved in the field.
4. Standardization Department
This department drafts and submits proposals for industrial standards (JIS, ISO) related to terminology, testing methods, raw materials, and various products in the rubber industry, aiming to promote industrial revitalization and rationalization.
5. Awards
To encourage research and technological development in rubber, elastomers, and soft materials, and to recognize outstanding research achievements, we present various awards on a regular basis.
The Award of Society of Rubber Science And Technology, Japan, The Oenslager Award of Society of Rubber Science And Technology, Japan, The Technical Contribution Award of Society of Rubber Science And Technology, Japan, The Best Paper Award of Society of Rubber Science And Technology, Japan, The Technical Progress Award of Society of Rubber Science And Technology, Japan, Encouragement Award of Science and Technology, CERI Encouragement Award for Young Scientist, Bridgestone Soft Materials Frontier Award.
6. Branch Activities
The association is divided into four branches—Kanto, Chubu, Kansai, and Kyushu—and regularly holds plant tours, seminars, and lectures.
7. International Activities
(1) Operation of the International Rubber Conference (IRC) when held in Japan, as well as dispatch of representatives and cooperation.
(2) Conducting discussions on technical conferences and journals with Asian countries.
(3) We have signed MOUs with the following organizations and are implementing mutual exchanges (logos are listed in alphabetical order by region).
