Lithium ion battery (LIB) is a solution for the energy challenges of our planet. It becomes more and more important since it can not only be used in consumption products but can also be applied to the automobiles and family use by further performance improvement.
The “performance” which involves productivity of electrode and battery, capacity, resistance and cycle life is highly affected by the binder. In this article, we will introduce the latest technique of SBR emulsion which covers the control of interaction between binder and CMC/electrolyte and the toughness of polymer. The required property can be achieved by introducing specific functional group to the SBR. If we increase the interaction between binder and CMC/electrolyte, adhesive strength and resistance can both be improved. Furthermore, the mechanical strength can also be enhanced by modifying the functional group on SBR surface to suppress the large volume change of silicon-carbon electrode and thus extend the lifetime of battery.
